The Miniature Poodle originated in France. Their height is within 11 to 15 inches. Their life span is typically 10 to 14 years. The Miniature Poodle is grouped in the companion dog breed category, because it is such a good companion. They are good with children and also make good watchdogs - not guard dogs. They have a moderate need for exercise, but a demanding need for grooming. Just look at our picture of Boaz when we first got him, and how much he needed a grooming. We are able to do our own, but most people need to find a good groomer. When we raise our poodle babies, and all of our puppies, we give them several gentle, loving experiences in the groom shop. We want our puppies to be used to the experience, so that they will hopefully be a groomer's dream, and so they won't be traumatized the first time you take them to be groomed.
The Pekapoo is a crossbred dog, created by breeding a purebred Poodle with a purebred Pekingese. In addition to being a combination of the two breed names, the name is possible a pun on the children's game Peekaboo also. The Pekapoo is a small dog, weighint from 6 to 20 pounds at maturity. The wide range comes from the differing sizes of Poodles. We have the smaller end Miniature Poodle males, who are just over the 11 inch height, putting them into the Miniature category. Similar to Poodle, Pekapoos have a non-shedding coat and carry little dander, although on occasion there can be loose fur. This makes them ideal pets for people with allergies.
They also have a reputation for being playful, sweet, and very good with children.
Due to the mixed nature of their breeding, Pekapoos have few defining characteristics.
Our Pekapoo Puppies can come in all colors. We have had creamy whites, sables, and blacks. (With our red poodle and red pekingese girl, we hope to have some red pekapoos to offer also).
Pekapoos are fairly low maintnence. There are few health problems associated with Pekapoos. One health problem, however is breathing. It is not uncommon for a pekapoo to experience a spell of breathing difficulty every now and then. As long as their gums and tongue are not a blue shade, then there is no need to take the dog to the veternarian, unless this is a chronic problem. The other problem associated with a pekapoo is tearing of the eyes. Though tear stains seem inevitable, it can become a serious problem if the eyes become swollen or the tear stains are too dark of a color. Light, peach colored tear stains are nothing to worry about unless they become a dark purple/ red color. If this problem occurs, you can simply get eyedrops for your dog. Dental problems are also common for Pekeapoos. In many cases it is hard for the animal to eat, as the teeth don't meet up in a nice way to help with the chewing of the food that they eat. (Our vet checks for bad bites, and you will know about your puppy's teeth before you get your puppy. Also, chewing on old fashioned cow bones - cooked - is a good way for dogs to keep their teeth clean).
With a well-balanced diet and annual vet visits, Pekeapoos have a life expectancy of 12-16 years.
A Pekapoo's fur should be kept short, as their fur becomes matted in a dreadlock very easily. In addition, this prevents tear stains from becoming a problem. Long hair should not be a problem, however, as long as the dog's fur is brushed once or twice daily. Short or long, though, the fur should be brushed at least once every two days. (some of our puppies, have grown up to have hair that does not tangle easily, but all will definitely benefit from being brushed out regularly, if only for the time you spend brushing him or her out). Just a quick note on grooming mixed breeds. Because they are a mix, there is not an absolute set pattern to follow. As your pet's owners, you can decide for yourself how you want to keep their hair. Do you want the face clean, like a poodle, or with long hair parted down the bridge of the nose? Consider what hair type your puppy has, soft and silky like the maltese, straight like the pekingese, or more curly like their poodle side? It is always nice to keep the hair out of their eyes, to keep the ears cleaned, the hair scissored between the pads of the feet, and to keep their little potty patch area pretty short as well - for good hygiene. You are free to be creative on hair cut styles - and have fun too. Find a groomer or groomers who cares, and who will treat your puppy / dog with kindness. We give all of our puppies very loving grooming experiences before they leave here. We so want that to be an enjoyable part of their lives as well.
The deliberate cross breeding of the Maltese and Poodle creates a wonderful new crossbreed known as the Maltipoo. This cross breed produces Maltipoo puppies that share the qualities of both pure breeds. Maltipoos are extremely intelligent, eager to please, and very loyal to their human family. The Maltipoo is a natural for the family as it is happy to be your companion - ready to play and romp with the kids or curl up in Mom's lap. They are loving and gentle dogs.
Maltipoos can make great therapy dogs and have an uncanny instinct to gravitate towards an ill or needy person, whether that be a child or an adult. This has been shown over and over.
The size of a Maltipoo will vary depending on its pedigree but generally maltipoos are between 5 and 12 lbs. These dogs are non-shedding, and can be found in a variety of colors, though light colors are more common. Their lifespan is 10 - 15 years.
The coat is soft and fluffy, slight wave to curl. Because the Maltipoo is a cross, the coat can have different textures and feel according to which dominant gene the puppy draws.
Happy, giving, loving, full of life and devotion, the Maltipoo stands out as one of the leading and rising stars to become a purebreed in years to follow.
